Heartless

                                                             Heartless

Heartless, by Marissa Meyer, is about Catherine Pinkerton, the heiress to a wealthy estate called Rock Turtle Cove. The story is set in an area of Wonderland named Hearts and the king of this area wants to marry Catherine, but she wants to open a bakery instead with her marriage dowry. She also doesn't want to marry him because he is a silly and cowardly man.  Her mother doesn't approve of baking and pressures her to marry the king. Catherine and her family go to the King's ball, where her mother hopes the King will propose. There she meets the king's new court joker and he puts on a spectacular show that impresses Catherine. After the show, the king tries to make an announcement and Catherine, fearing he will propose, sends her cat Cheshire to create a distraction before he can announce anything. She runs out of the castle, sees a shadowy man, and faints. When she wakes up, the new court joker is there to help her. He escorts her back to her carriage and she goes home early. Catherine begins to realize she has feelings for the joker, who's name is Jest.

The situation where Catherine's mother doesn't approve of her baking reminds me of a similar situation in my own life. It happened when my mother didn't approve of me working in the yard with my grandfather. She said that a young lady should not be doing dangerous tasks like the ones I had been doing. Catherine's mother said something similar about her baking hobby, but she tolerated it because it pleased the King. My mother tolerated my job because it made my grandfather work less and she cares about him and his well-being.

If I was Catherine at this point, I would try being honest with both my parents and the King. I would propose my bakery plan in a professional way and if they say no, I would not get upset. Then I would tell the King about my feelings for Jest and see how I can wait to get engaged until I am sure about it. Finally, I would tell Jest about my feelings and respect whatever his wishes were. This would be more responsible than keeping it all to myself.
