I am reading a book called Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. This book is about a 12 year old girl named Miri who lives on mountain called Mount Eskel. Their lifestyle is simple: mining in the quarries, chasing after goats, and getting water out of wells. Miri wants to get involved and work in the quarries like the other children her age, but her father refuses to let her. One special day, Miri wakes up exhilarated because the traders have come for trading day. An unexpected visitor comes with the traders in search of young ladies from ages 12 to 17 to the Princess Academy. They would train them to eventually choose one young lady that is most fit to be the prince's wife. That means Miri has to leave behind her father and her older sister, Marda. The girls don't enjoy their stay but they have to make an effort to stay in the Princess Academy for a year.
This book reminds me of my current experience because I am going through a lot of changes. Out of no where, I heard that my dad got back with his ex wife from 20 years ago and like two months later they're engaged. Now I'm moving to Gilbert and I have the honor of having 5 other siblings. Miri and I are alike because we are both being hit with a lot of new things and we are being taking away from people we know and love. Even though I am liking the situation I am in, like Miri, I am leaving behind a lot of things that I am familiar with.
If I were Miri I would bare through the academy because it seems like it would be an honor to be there. I wouldn't escape the academy like Esa and Frid had in mind because I wouldn't want to be punished by the tutor Olana. I began to think that Miri was very brave because she took the risk to help Britta with the lecture and she got punished. I was surprised when Olana slapped Miri with a stick and Miri continued to let her do it. I love that Miri is very sweet to other characters and can still be friends with people that work in the quarry.
