Text to Self - The Book Thief
The Book Thief
By: Markus Zusak
I am reading the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, it is a book about a young orphan Liesel Meminger's who's life has changed in an instant, on there way to there foster home her brother dies. At her brothers graveside there is a book The Grave Digger's Handbook left left there by accident so she took it because it was the one thing that she saw when she last saw her brother. Stealing that book was her first act of book thievery. It was also was the beginning of her love for books, with the help of her accordion playing foster father she learned to read. These are dangerous times and Liesel's foster parents are hiding a Jew in their basement her world is completely flipped upside down.
This character reminds me of my little cousin Ella because when she was 3 her mom started forgetting everything. So when her dad could not take care of Ella she had to move to Indiana and live with my aunt. She had a hard time adjusting to everything and soon learned to read, but when her dad finally came up to live in Indiana her mom was put in a mental hospital, and Ella never wanted to visit her and Ella's mom died a couple months later. She reminds me of Liesel because she resorted to reading in a hard time.
I love the way this book is really easy to connect to and how the story is a true time in history. This book is very realistic because I am sure many people back then had the same or similar stories. I was surprised when they invited the Jew into their house and considering the punishment that they get if the Nazi's find the Jew they could die. I think this setting is important because it show the time were hard and eating a nourishing meal was almost unheard of. I am not sure how hard it was for Liesel to keep this big secret and act like their is noting to hind.
