Text to Self: Divergent
Text to Self
I have begun to read Divergent by Veronica Roth. This book is about the adventures of a young 16 year old girl deciding the rest of her life based on a aptitude test that will see where she belongs. Her life gets turned upside down when she gets the results. This story takes place in what used to be Chicago, but is now a Dystopian world divided into five factions. Amity, the peaceful, Candor, the honest, Erudite, the intelligent, Abnegation, the selfless, and Dauntless, the brave. When Beatrice Prior, the main character, goes to take the test, she can't help but wonder what her results will be. The "test" should actually be called a torture simulation. A serum controlled by a person recording what's happening puts you through a series of situations that will help determine what faction you belong in. When Beatrice is finally done with the test she can tell that the person recording the results looked concerned. "Never tell anybody what your results are. If they find out you are a divergent, they will kill you." Definitely not what Tris wanted to hear. But when it came time to choose what faction she will be in for the rest of her life, her choice astonished everybody. The Dauntless are typically not the people you see a "Stiff" hanging around with. Although, Tris has always admired how brave and free they are. Dauntless initiation was not what Tris expected, because before you are a member of a faction, you must train to act like one. This is where Tris being a divergent puts her in danger. You see, when you choose a faction, they train you to dress, think, and act like a member of that faction. Divergents' however, think differently and have a piece of each faction within them. This is where problems begin for Tris.
The main character, Tris, reminds me of myself a little bit. She always willing to try new things, not for others, but for herself. She also reminds me of my friend Hailey, because she is willing to risk anything to protect her friends, no matter what the consequences. In the book, Tris's friend Al, had to stand in front of a target and have knives thrown at him without flinching. Tries knew Al was already having a hard tiome during initiation, so she gladly took his place. One time, me and Hailey were in class and she knew that I hated speaking ort reading aloud to the class, so when the teacher calle don me to present first I was mortified. Hailey, being the good friend her is, quickly asked the teacher to take my spot so I didn't have to go first.
My favorite things about my book so far, is the way my author can really describe things from Tris's point of view. It's almost like the author is her head! This is a quality that I look for in an author when choosing a book to read. I wonder why divergents are dangerous. Is it the way they think? Is it because they tend to act differently then others? The adventure definitely never seems to end in this story. That's why this book is a good reading choice, because the author always has something happening that will keep you wanting more.
