Text To Text: White Giraffe
The White Giraffe
The White Giraffe is about a young girl named Martine who has to go live with her grandmother after her parents are killed in a terrible fire. Her grandmother lives in Africa on a game reserve, so Martine has to give up her entire life. She arrives on the reserve and finds out her grandmother is a very strict and irritable person. She begins her new life safe, but miserable. One day, she hears a legend about an albino giraffe that is rumored to live on the reserve, but has never been spotted by anyone, but a few people. She looks out her window one night, which overlooks the watering hole, and sees the white giraffe. She goes outside, but by then it is already gone. She continues to look for the giraffe night after night. She finally finds him and finds out his name is Jemmy. He is in danger from poachers that want to sell him for money. She makes it her mission to protect him.
Text To Text
Martine reminds me of James in James And The Giant Peach because they both have lost their parents in a terrible tragedy. They also make friends with unlikely creatures that help them deal with their grief. Jemmy is comforting to Martine because like her, he doesn't have anyone that truly cares about him. Martine's grandmother acts like she doesn't want Martine around. James' seven bug friends help him deal with his grief by taking him somewhere he has always wanted to go. His mean aunts actively tell him that they don't want him around. They treat him like a servant and make him survive on the tiniest of scraps.
I felt sad when Martine's grandmother is really cold to her and doesn't even try to welcome her after the sad death of her parents. She may have been grieving and this was her way of being sad, but it made Martine feel worse than she already does. She could have been at least sympathetic to Martine, but she was harsh instead. Instead of confiding in her grandmother about her feelings for her parents, she takes it out on helping Jemmy. She has already seen so much loss, she has to save Jemmy from being taken from her.
