Text to World: Princess Academy
The book that I am reading is called Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. It is about a twelve year old girl named Miri who is forced to be taken to a princess academy with other girls from Mount Eskel ages twelve to seventeen. The princess academy will teach them to behave and become princesses. After a year there, the prince will pick one lady to be his wife. Miri tries to convince her father and her older sister, Marda, that she can't attend the academy. After all the girls have said their "goodbyes" to their families, they hike up to the princess academy. After a while, the girls do not enjoy their stay and plan to run away. They decide that they might as well try, but Miri doesn't want to stay there still. Some of Miri's friends get mad at Miri for wanting to leave. Miri starts studying books so she can actually try to become a princess. She makes friends with Gerti after she had freed Miri from the closet.
When the girls were forced to go the princess academy, I immediately thought of how young men were drafted to go the military. I also thought of the military after the ladies were taken to the academy and they were forced to learn, like the military's way of training. When Olana (the princess tutor) let the girls go outside and exercise, I thought of a prison. In prisons they let the prisoners play basketball and lift weights, like the academy does. When the princess academy invaded trading day to take the girls, it reminded me of police officers when they invade your home with a search warrant.
I was surprised when Tutor Olana let her students play outside because of how mean she was. I was kind of expecting the academy to come on trading day. I don't like one of the girls, Katar, because she's very rude and arrogant to Miri after she had proved that she could read very well. Bena was very mean and unfair to Miri and she didn't do anything.
