Text To World - Speak

For the past few days of reading Speak, I finally figured out what had happened to Melinda at the party and why she called the cops. The night of the party Melinda and a few of her ex-friends were there and got a little carried away. Only 13 years old.....and drinking, they had no idea what was going on. Fights were happening, arguments, temper, violent actions, assault, things were out of hand. For a whole year Melinda has been keeping these things to herself. According to her, the safest place to be is alone, inside her own head. . Now its time for Melinda to "speak" the truth. Her parents decide to go to the guidance councilor and Principle Principle, talk about it, and leave. What good did that do... Melinda, the one out of 100, actually had her head screwed on. She called the cops at the party, a few people got arrested, some expelled from school, some sent home. She wasn't comfortable with who she was with and where she was so after she called the cops she ran through the woods to get home before the cops even got a chance to get there, and because of what she did, she is hated at school, has no friends, gets made fun of, bullied, and is considered too weird to hang out with. Her freshman year is the worst first year of high school a teenager could have. Heather even ended up completely leaving her for a clique "The Marthas". Now Heather's friends with Meg n Emily n everyone else. Later in the book Melinda tells Rachel/Rachelle what happened and that her boyfriend had assaulted and hit her. She thinks that Melinda is only saying that because she is jealous of their relationship, and is convinced that he is the nicest most amazing guy in the world. Rachel fails to believe it until it almost happens to her at prom. Melinda finally did what was right and now practically the whole school feels bad for her. Now that she has let out the truth, her confidence has boosted up, even though what happened would haunt her forever, she is prepared for anything coming up.

What I have read so far connects to the world because all these things that happened at the party happen in real life. For example, the T.V. channel investigation discovery (ID) is similar to this except no one gets killed. In other situations, kids get bullied at school every day and don't know whether to tell or not because if they do..."they" will come get them. So, just like Melinda thought, the safest place to be is alone, inside her own head. Kids would rather just keep things to themselves. Away from parents, principles, councilors, teachers, etc.. Just like I said before, many kids in junior high or high school, could easily relate to this book. Especially kids that are really nice, they get bullied just for being kind. In the real world, most people get caught an get punished then realize that they were doing wrong and regret it, just like they did here.

Now that I have just finished my book Speak, I think it is a pretty good book, interesting enough to grab your attention. The beginning of the book teens could definitely relate to, but once you get to what happened at the party it is something that isn't likely to happen. I do want to say that the summary on the back of the book didn't give out enough information. It gave the main idea but it should've let out a lot of information that it didn't. It wasn't a bad book, it was actually the most interesting book that I have ever read. So interesting that I didn't get bored with it like normal. I like how Laurie let her imagination go despite what others thought. Overall, I would rate this book a 4/5 .
