Text to World: The Book Theif
The Book Thief
Imagine living in times where there are empty fuel tanks from planes left by their enemies spread throughout Himmel Streets in Germany. That is where Liesel Meminger's is living in the times of war. Her mother was not able to take care of her and her brother died so all of a sudden she is put into a foster home. She vaguely knows how to speak German and can't read so she is given a clean slate and tries to make the best of it. Her foster father had a dept to pay to a dear friend who died, so the family takes in his Jewish son, who will live in the basement, besides the cold winter nights, where he sleeps by the fire. In those times it is very dangerous to be keeping a Jew and the punishment can be death.
The problem in this story is similar and almost exactly the same to what happened in 1939, Nazi Germany. Just like in the book where the children go to Hitler Youth Group, in real times Hitler created the Hitler Youth group to teach the young how to deal with pain and have the same beliefs as Hitler does. In the book, Rudy is asked questions, like when is Hitler's birthday, and if he gets it wrong he has to run laps. The people with disabilities are picked on and if you stand up you will be punished. Hitler looked for the strongest people and took out the weak.
I noticed that this book tells many events that actually happened around the time of World War II, such as the children going to Hitler Youth group, the Germans gather around for a book burning ceremony, family members would get called to go serve in the war, kids who's parents leave them to be fostered, and the neighborhood families would go to the person who had the deepest basement to get away from the bombs dropping. I like how it relates to what happens and it can relate to people today.
